Cost of hiring software developers in Nepal (2026)

A mid-level software engineer in Nepal earns roughly NPR 50,000 to 90,000 a month, about US$3,900 to 7,100 a year. The same role hired in-house in the US, UK, Canada, Australia or Singapore costs roughly 10 to 37 times that, with statutory employer costs added where we could source them. This guide sets out the sourced numbers, what moves the price, and the costs that do not show up on an invoice.

The short answer

What a developer in Nepal is paid

There is no official salary survey for software work in Nepal. The figures below come from job portals and self-reported salary sites, so treat them as ranges, not a price list. They agree on the broad picture: a working mid-level engineer in Nepal earns somewhere between NPR 600,000 and 1.1 million a year.

We converted Nepali rupees and Indian rupees at the Nepal Rastra Bank mid-rate of 27 October 2026 (US$1 = NPR 152.30). We left the Philippine and Vietnamese figures in local currency because Nepal Rastra Bank does not publish those rates.

The comparison

What the same engineer costs in-house abroad

A salary is not what an employer pays. Each market adds statutory employer contributions on top, before health cover, pensions above the minimum, equipment, office space or recruiter fees. The table below adds only the named statutory items we could source from government pages, so the real figure is higher.

Where two sources disagree we show both ends. The government figure is a median for employees in that occupation; the Indeed figure is an average drawn from job adverts and user reports.

Reading the gap

A Nepal salary is not the price you pay

The salary gap is large, but no one outside Nepal hires at a Nepali salary. Unless you open a local entity, you pay a company or a freelancer, and their price covers the engineer's pay, management, tools, tax, idle time between projects and a margin. That price is what you should compare against the in-house figures above.

Published freelance benchmarks show the shape of the market. Arc.dev's 2026 table puts senior freelance developers at US$95-150 an hour in the US, US$78-125 in the UK, US$80-130 in Canada, US$90-145 in Australia and US$70-120 in Singapore, against US$25-60 in India, US$22-50 in the Philippines and US$28-60 in Vietnam. Second Talent's October 2026 table for mid-level full-stack work gives India US$20-52 and Vietnam US$28-68. Neither covers Nepal, and we could not find a verifiable public source that does. Be wary of anyone who quotes you a single 'Nepal rate'.

The industry behind those engineers is real and growing. An Institute for Integrated Development Studies study put Nepal's IT service exports at about US$515 million in 2022, up 64% on the year before. Industry estimates reported by The Kathmandu Post put 2025 near US$1 billion, with around 100,000 people employed, though much of the income arrives recorded as remittance and does not show up cleanly in official trade figures.

What moves the price

Seniority, stack and how you engage

Three things decide most of the number on a quote.

Seniority comes first. In the Payscale sample, mid-career developers in Nepal report NPR 750,000 in total pay, against an all-levels base average of NPR 450,000. At lead level the pool shrinks: engineers who can design a system, review other people's code and talk directly to a client are hard to find in any market, Nepal included.

Stack comes second. Common web work in React, Next.js, Python or PHP draws on the largest pool of engineers. Native mobile, data engineering, cloud security and anything with a regulatory edge draw on a smaller one and cost more.

The engagement model comes third. It changes not only the price but who carries the risk.

  • Fixed scope: a written specification and a fixed price. The vendor carries the estimate risk, so the price includes a buffer. Works when you know what you want built.
  • Dedicated team: named engineers working only on your product, billed monthly. You carry the scope risk and direct the work. Works for products that keep changing.
  • Retainer: a set amount of maintenance and support each month for something already live. Works for sites and apps that need updates, patches and someone on call, not new features.
Hidden costs

What the invoice does not show

Offshore work is cheaper per hour. It is not free of overhead, and the overhead lands on your side. Budget for it before you compare quotes.

Management time is the largest item. Someone at your company has to write the requirements, answer questions, review the work and decide what ships. If nobody owns that, the cheapest team in the world will build the wrong thing quickly.

Overlap hours are fixed by the clock. Nepal runs at UTC+5:45 with no daylight saving. London is 4 hours 45 minutes behind in summer and 5 hours 45 minutes in winter, Singapore 2 hours 15 minutes ahead, Sydney 4 hours 15 minutes ahead (5 hours 15 minutes in daylight saving). New York and Toronto are 9 hours 45 minutes to 10 hours 45 minutes behind, and the US West Coast further still. For North America, plan on a short daily call at the edge of both working days and written handoffs for the rest.

Handover and QA cost money twice if skipped. Code that arrives without tests, documentation or deployment notes has to be learned again by whoever maintains it next. Ask who writes the tests, who reviews the pull requests, and whether the code lives in your repository from the first day.

  • Your own time: requirements, reviews and decisions, every week.
  • Calendar cost: one meeting slot a day at an awkward hour for one side.
  • Onboarding: the first weeks are slower while the team learns your product.
  • QA and review: either the vendor does it and prices it, or you do it and pay in your own hours.
  • Exit: handover notes and access you control, so you can move the work elsewhere.

How Lattice Nepal prices work

Lattice Nepal Pvt. Ltd. is a software studio founded in 2020, with offices in Kathmandu and Bharatpur. We build and run web and mobile products on Next.js, React, FastAPI, Python, Flutter and Android, hosted on AWS, Cloudflare and cPanel/LiteSpeed. Our clients include PTE Nepal, the PTE Sprint Android app and Ayriva, and we run our own product, Restro. We count 200+ projects and 15+ clients.

We publish two prices. WordPress support starts at US$89 a month, with a second plan at US$189 a month. A security assessment of how your software is built, shipped and run is free.

Everything else, whether a fixed-scope build, a dedicated team or a retainer, is quoted in writing against a written scope before you commit. We do not publish a day rate because the same day rate means different things on different projects.

Common questions

What buyers ask

How much does it cost to hire a developer in Nepal?
A mid-level software engineer employed by a Nepali company earns roughly NPR 50,000-90,000 a month, about US$3,900-7,100 a year (NecoJobs, 2026). Hiring through a studio or agency costs more, because the price also covers management, tools, tax and margin. Ask for a written quote against a defined scope.
Is it cheaper to outsource software development to Nepal than to hire in-house?
On salary, the gap is large. A US developer costs about US$146,600 a year with federal employer taxes, a UK developer about US$76,000-91,000 with employer National Insurance, against about US$3,900-7,100 for a mid-level salary in Nepal. You pay a vendor's price, not a Nepali salary, so compare written quotes, then add your own management time, overlap hours and QA, since those costs sit on your side.
What time zone does Nepal use?
Nepal Standard Time is UTC+5:45 and does not change for daylight saving. Overlap is easiest with Singapore, Australia and the UK. With North America it is limited to the start or end of each working day.
Are Nepal developer rates lower than India, the Philippines or Vietnam?
Reported salaries in Nepal sit below Indian averages (INR 712,061-886,111 a year, about US$7,500-9,300). No published freelance or vendor benchmark we could verify covers Nepal, so compare written quotes rather than headline hourly rates.
What does Lattice Nepal charge?
Our only published prices are WordPress support from US$89 a month and US$189 a month, plus a free security assessment. Other work is quoted in writing per scope.
