Nepal Bank internet banking login guide: NBL e-Banking and BankSmart XP app registration, password reset, transfer limits, fees and customer care in Nepal.
Nepal Bank Limited (NBL) is the country's oldest bank. It was established on Kartik 30, 1994 BS (15 November 1937) under the Nepal Bank Act 1937, and it marked the formal start of banking in Nepal. Today its customers manage their accounts through three digital channels: the NBL e-Banking web portal, the NBL BankSmart XP mobile app (both app stores list it as NBL BankSmart XP, their descriptions call it NBL Mobile Banking, and the bank's older user manual calls it NBL Smart), and a BankSmart XP web sign-in page. This guide covers where each one lives, how to register, how to log in, what to do when you forget a password, and the limits and fees that Nepal Bank publishes for mobile banking.
NBL e-Banking vs NBL BankSmart XP: Which One Do You Need?
Nepal Bank keeps internet banking and mobile banking as two separate services with separate sign-up routes. The main website has an e-Banking button that opens the web portal, and a Login menu that leads to NBL BankSmart XP. The bank's Download Forms page now also carries application forms for a revised service it calls iBank; see the e-Banking registration section below.
| Point | NBL e-Banking (web) | NBL BankSmart XP (mobile app) |
|---|---|---|
| Where to access | ebank.nepalbank.com.np | Google Play and Apple App Store; web sign-in at ibank.nepalbank.com.np |
| How to register | Paper application at your branch | Self-registration inside the app |
| Service options | e-Banking with fund transfer, or e-Banking without fund transfer (view only) | Fund transfer, bill payment, QR payment, wallet load and more |
| Customer types | Individuals (natural persons) and corporates | Account holders with a registered mobile number |
| Published limits | Not listed on the bank's website | NPR 3,00,000 per day (see the limits table below) |
For most individual customers the app is the faster route, because you can activate it yourself in a few minutes. The e-Banking portal is the option to choose if you want web access to your account and are willing to visit a branch to sign up, and it is also the channel the bank's application form offers to corporate customers.
How to Register for NBL BankSmart XP (Mobile Banking)
You need an active Nepal Bank account and your registered mobile number, meaning the number the bank holds for your account. If you have changed SIMs, update the number at your branch first. The steps below are the self-registration process published on Nepal Bank's mobile banking page:
- Download NBL BankSmart XP from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.
- Open the app and tap "Not Activated Yet", then "Let's Get Started".
- Enter your registered mobile number and your Nepal Bank account number.
- Enter the activation code that arrives by SMS.
- Set a login password. The bank asks for at least 8 characters with a mix of letters and numbers.
- Set a 4-digit transaction PIN. You will need it to approve payments and transfers.
- Log in to the app with the password you set.
Nepal Bank also publishes a printable NBL Mobile Banking Application Form on its Download Forms page, for customers who prefer to register through a branch.
How to Register for NBL e-Banking (Internet Banking)
Internet banking at Nepal Bank is not self-service. You apply on paper and a branch officer approves the request. The form is called "Application for NBL Internet Banking" and is listed on the same Download Forms page.
- Download and print the "Application for NBL Internet Banking" form, or collect a copy at your branch.
- Fill in your name, address, email, landline and mobile number, account name and account number. If you want more than one account linked, list your primary account and the additional accounts.
- Choose the service type: e-Banking with fund transfer service or e-Banking without fund transfer service.
- Choose the customer type: Natural person or Corporate.
- Sign the authorisation section. By signing, you allow the bank to debit your account for the subscription and other applicable fees.
- Submit the form at your branch. A bank officer approves it and records the approval on the official-use section of the form.
The form's second page carries the e-Banking terms and conditions. Read them before signing. Among other things, they state that you are responsible for keeping your username and password secret, and that the bank may act on instructions given with your password without making further enquiries.
The newer iBank application forms
The same Download Forms page also lists two newer forms, Application of MBank iBank for Nepali Citizens and Application of MBank iBank for NRN. Both are one-page letters in Nepali addressed to your branch manager. They say the bank has revised its earlier internet banking service into a new iBank service and ask for that service to be switched on for your account number. The citizen version asks for your full name, citizenship number with issue date and district, National ID number, permanent and current address, contact number and email, with copies of your citizenship certificate and National ID attached. The NRN version asks for your passport number, NRN card number, country of residence and address, a Viber or WhatsApp number and email, with copies of the passport, citizenship certificate, National ID and NRN card. Every field is marked compulsory, and by signing you accept responsibility for keeping your User ID, password and OTP safe. The forms do not give a web address for iBank; the only "ibank" address on the bank's website is the sign-in page at ibank.nepalbank.com.np, which the Login menu labels NBL BankSmart XP. Before you fill in the 2019 form, ask your branch which application it currently accepts.
How to Log In to Nepal Bank Internet Banking
NBL e-Banking (web portal)
- Go to https://ebank.nepalbank.com.np/. You can also reach it from the e-Banking button on the bank's website.
- Enter the username and password the bank issued to you after your application was approved.
- Complete any verification the page asks for, then sign in.
Type the address yourself or use the button on the official site at nepalbank.com.np. Do not follow links from SMS, email or social media messages, because Nepal Bank warns that fake pages and profiles are used to collect login details.
NBL BankSmart XP (app and web sign-in)
- Open the NBL BankSmart XP app.
- Sign in with the login password you set during activation.
- If your phone supports it, you can turn on fingerprint login. Nepal Bank lists biometric login for both the login and the transaction PIN.
Nepal Bank's website also links a BankSmart XP sign-in page at ibank.nepalbank.com.np/sign-in, under the Login menu.
Forgot Password or Locked Out: What to Do
NBL BankSmart XP
Nepal Bank's mobile banking page has a section headed "How to self-password reset for NBL Mobile Banking", so a self-service reset exists in the app; start there before you go to a branch. The bank publishes the steps only as an image, so we do not reproduce them here. If the in-app reset does not work, email the bank's digital banking desk at payment@nepalbank.com.np or visit your branch with your identity document. Nepal Bank's published mobile banking tariff lists a PIN reset charge of NPR 50.
NBL e-Banking
The bank does not publish a self-service reset procedure for the e-Banking portal. If you cannot sign in, email the bank's digital banking desk at payment@nepalbank.com.np (listed for digital banking issues and queries) or visit your branch with your identity document.
If you receive a password or PIN reset SMS or email that you did not request, report it to the bank straight away. Nepal Bank treats this as a sign that someone may be trying to get into your account.

Security Practices Nepal Bank Asks You to Follow
Nepal Bank says it will never ask customers for online banking passwords, OTPs, mobile or wallet passwords and PINs, or ATM card PIN or CVV. Anyone who asks for these is not the bank. The bank's cyber security page also asks customers to:
- Use strong, unique passwords and never share a password, PIN or OTP with anyone.
- Avoid links promising lottery wins or gift hampers on email, Facebook, Viber, WhatsApp and similar platforms. Nepal Bank warns these can install malware that captures usernames, passwords, PINs and OTPs.
- Watch for fake Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages pretending to be the bank.
- Keep antivirus software installed and up to date, and check the website address before entering any details.
- Review your account regularly for transactions you did not make.
Forward suspicious emails to infosec@nepalbank.com.np and gunaso@nepalbank.com.np, as the bank's cyber security page instructs.
